XAVIER QUIJAS YXAYOTL

Ancient
Mayan/Aztec
Spiritual Music
Workshop

Years ago the music went silent. The instruments from our ancestors gave way to guitars, trumpets and violins from across the Atlantic Ocean. When people think of music from Mexico they think of this newly formed Mariachi style as traditional Mexican heritage. They are wrong in thinking so. The Spaniards and the Government squashed the ancient Mayan and Aztec rhythms for hundreds of years. For they feared the strength of the Aztec warriors seeing power within their rituals and drums. Over 2,000 years ago music came from clay flutes and instruments were made from natural materials from the earth and filled the temples and courtyards of ancient civilizations. Though these instruments were hidden from the modern world, they still exist today.

Experience the magic of thousands of years of knowledge and the secret sacred sounds of ancient Aztec and Mayan Civilizations as few have ever heard.

Xavier was an absolute hit in 2005 and 2006, one of the most spiritual and wonderful musicians and performers and individuals to ever appear at the Expo. Prepare to be transported to an ancient world of mystery and magic, to a performance of dimensional alchemy and transformation straight from the pages of ancient Codexes, thought lost, and clay flutes carrying the energy of the ancients. This extraordinary event is only $10.

Xavier Quijas Yxayotl was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco of Huichol heritage (his indigenous name, "Yxayotl," is Nahuatl for "tears"). Originally an artist, in the 1970’s he left city life and moved to the mountains of Jalisco and Nayarit, Mexico to live with his Huichol relatives and the Tepehuanes people. There Xavier studied and played ancient instruments, participating in ceremonies and rituals. He developed a passion for making museum quality indigenous instruments – Mayan and Aztec drums and flutes, turtle shell drums, log drums, rattles, gourds. Xavier has spent most of his life constructing and playing these instruments. He says "All that I do comes from a spirit within me, music is a live representation of nature. In looking at my cultural roots and music roots, I realize music crosses all barriers! It was at this time that I decided to form a group and name it America Indigena. The group is composed of people who share my musical sentiments". During their travels of concerts and ceremonies they interpret the authentic music of the Mayans , Aztecs , Tarahumaras , Yaquis , Tepehuanes and Huicholes . Xavier also sings in Tarahumara and his native Huichol and Nahuatl Languages. "The concerts are not just for entertainment. I give them a special message with serious significance" he says. "Through them I express the origin and true meaning that exists in that "hidden" world unknown to the generations of our times - this is an ancient music for new generation. I hope that with my music I am able to bring you at least a little of the force of our ancestors, and I hope to captivate your soul and your spirit!"

In 2004, Xavier performed for the opening ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize giving blessings to the Dalai Lama, Michael Gorbachev and Jimmy Carter!
You may purchase Xavier’s CDs in Booth 101, or outside the main auditorium Sunday afternoon. Do not miss this rare opportunity to be transported to another world, through space and time to the roots of your own soul, to merge and mingle with the sounds and dances of the Goddess. We are thrilled and honored that we can offer this event to the Expo. Don’t miss it!
